This is Jaakko’s Bachelor’s thesis made in the spring of 2025. The thesis received the highest grade of 5.

As automation trends are shifting towards distributed control systems to enable more cost-effective production via system reconfigurability and reusability. Shorter product life cycles and a higher product variety are driving the shift. The thesis studied two prominent standards in the field of industrial automation, IEC 61131-3 and IEC 61499, and focused on methods and benefits of transitioning between them.
